Day 2: Tuesday 12th July 2005, Biarritz, Bayonne, Saint Jean Pied de Port, Orisson, 8km walking

An early morning train ride from Bayonne to Saint Jean Pied de Pont, through magnificent scenery in the foothills of the Pyrenees. The route followed along a river valley. This beautifully sunny day causing the sharpest reflections in the water that I think I have ever seen. Almost like a perfect mirror.

We did not stay in Saint Jean. We decided to begin straight away, keen to really start our Camino.

Very quickly we were walking up hill. For the next couple of hours it was all uphill, and our level of fitness came in to question, but the views were certainly worth it. We had planned to stop in the new albergue at Orisson about 8km from Saint Jean. As we were walking in the heat of the early afternoon we felt that was enough for our first day. Breaking us in gently.
