Autumn

Autumn is upon us. The heat is going out of the sun and the days are becoming cooler. The Autumn Equinox on September 23 rd marks a day of balance, when the day and night are equal, everything is in balance and harmony. After this day, the days become shorter and we begin to prepare for the winter months, when we can rest and recoup our energy.

Outside the leaves are changing to magnificent colours – orange, reds, yellow, gold and beginning to fall from the trees. A time of sycamore seed windmills spiraling down to earth and the clatter of conkers hitting the ground. Ripe fruit and the sweet scent of delicious apples ready for harvest.

I have vivid memories of school harvest festivals with all manner of fresh vegetables and fruits and then taking boxes of the produce to the elderly in the neighbourhood. I remember as a child running through piles of fallen leaves. My brother called it “runching” – a very descriptive term. Even last year, when I walked in woods with a friend and her dog, we delighted in the shower of golden leaves falling upon us, like golden rain. We had great fun and laughter throwing the leaves into the air and allowing them to shower down upon us: lovely connecting with our inner child.

Autumn is a time of balance and thanksgiving. Celebrate your whole selves, your inner and your outer, your masculine and feminine aspects, conscious and unconscious, your light and your dark (shadow) sides, your health and ill-health, fortune and misfortune. Express your gratitude for everything in your life and in the lives of your loved ones: good and bad. Be thankful for our wondrous planet Lady Gaia. When we express gratitude we open our hearts, allowing more love and abundance to enter.

Autumn Activities:

•  Get out into nature. Spend time just being quiet and observing. Watch the leaves. Can you find an acorn or conker? Can you see mushrooms and toadstools peeping up through the leaf litter? What are the birds doing now? Are there berries on any of the hedgerows? Be aware of the environment around you.

•  Meet with your friends for an autumn celebration. Bring fresh autumn food to share. Decorate the table with twigs and leaves of golden colours.

•  Spend some time reflecting on the past summer and spring. What needs to be balanced in your life right now. Are you working too much and need to bring more relaxation into your life? Is there too much anger and not enough love? How can you improve your health? Does your diet need balancing? Is there too much do-ing and not enough be-ing? Be honest with yourself and look at what needs adjusting.
